Whether you just got a new TV, replaced your remote, or the volume buttons stopped controlling the right device, programming a Dish remote takes about two minutes once you know which steps apply to your remote model.

Step 1: Figure out which Dish remote you have

The programming process differs by model. Check the back of your remote — the model number is printed on the battery compartment label.

ModelHow to identify itProgramming method
54.0 / 54.1 (Voice Remote)Has a microphone button; most common current modelPairing Wizard (see below)

Method A: Pairing Wizard (models 40.0 through 54.0)

This is the recommended method for all current Dish remotes. The Wizard tests codes automatically, so you do not need to look up a code first.

  1. Press the Home button twice (on model 40.0, press Menu once instead).
  2. Select Settings, then select Remote Control.
  3. Select TV, then select TV Pairing Wizard.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts. The Wizard will test a series of codes and ask you to confirm when your TV responds — usually a power-on or channel change.
  5. Once the correct code is found, it saves automatically.

Test the volume buttons after pairing. If volume still controls the Dish receiver instead of the TV, go back to Remote Control settings and confirm the TV pairing was saved.

Method B: Manual code entry (20-series older remotes)

  1. Turn your TV on manually.
  2. Point the remote at the TV. Press and hold the TV mode button (the one labeled “TV” on the top row) until all four mode lights illuminate, then release.
  3. Enter the 3-digit code for your TV brand from the table below. The TV mode light will blink as you enter each digit.
  4. Press the # button. The TV mode light should flash three times, confirming the code was accepted.
  5. Press Power on the remote. If the TV turns off, the code worked. Press # again to lock it in.
  6. If the TV does not respond, try the next code for your brand and repeat from step 3.

Method C: Auto-scan (when you cannot find your code)

Use this if your brand is not listed or none of the codes work.

  1. Turn the TV on manually.
  2. Hold the TV mode button until all mode lights flash, then release.
  3. Press and release the Power button once. The TV mode light becomes solid, showing the remote is in scan mode.
  4. Press the Up arrow button once per second. Each press sends a new code to the TV.
  5. When the TV turns off, stop pressing Up and immediately press # to save that code.
  6. Press Power to confirm the TV turns back on.

Dish remote codes for popular TV brands (20/21-series remotes)

These codes are for the older 20.x / 21.x Dish remotes that use manual 3-digit entry. If you have a 40.0 to 54.0 remote, use the Pairing Wizard above instead — no code needed. Try the first code listed; if it does not control power and volume, try the next, then fall back to the auto-scan method. For brands or models not listed, use Dish’s official lookup at mydish.com.

TV brand3-digit codes (try in order)
Samsung540, 738, 505
LG550, 627
Sony500, 639
Vizio505, 627
TCL535, 645, 651
Hisense501, 556, 535
Insignia538, 535, 539
Emerson569, 505, 568
Onn535, 645, 651

Codes above are for Dish 20/21-series remotes. They can vary by remote version — if none work, use the auto-scan method or Dish’s official code lookup. Newer 40-54 series remotes use the Pairing Wizard and do not need manual codes.

Troubleshooting: common problems after programming

Volume buttons still control the Dish box, not the TV. The TV is not paired or the pairing did not save. Go back to Settings then Remote Control and run the Pairing Wizard again. Make sure to complete all the prompts until it confirms the pairing.

Pairing Wizard ran through all codes but none worked. Some newer TV models need a code added to Dish’s database. Call Dish support at 1-800-333-3474 and ask if a code for your TV’s model number is available — Dish engineers update the database periodically.

Remote controls the TV but not the Dish receiver. Press the SAT button on the top of the remote to switch back to satellite control mode. The remote operates whichever device matches the active mode button (SAT, TV, or AUX).

Code worked at first but TV no longer responds. A firmware update on the TV can change how it receives IR signals. Re-run the Pairing Wizard and try alternate codes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Dish remote code if I use the Pairing Wizard?
No. The Wizard finds and tests codes automatically. Manual codes are only needed on older 20-series remotes or as a fallback.

Can I program the Dish remote to control my soundbar too?
Yes. Use the AUX mode button instead of TV, and follow the same Pairing Wizard steps or use the manual code entry. Select “Auxiliary Device” instead of TV in the settings menu.

Why does my Dish remote only control volume but not power?
Some TV codes in the Dish database only support partial control. Try alternate codes for your brand — often the second or third code listed has full power and volume support.

My TV brand is not in the list above — what do I do?
Use the auto-scan method (Method C). It cycles through hundreds of codes and will find one if the TV uses a standard IR protocol. Dish’s full code database at my.dish.com/support/remotes also covers hundreds of brands not listed here.

Will reprogramming the TV remote affect my Dish receiver?
No. The SAT, TV, and AUX mode buttons are independent. Changing the TV pairing does not affect SAT-mode (receiver) control.
